North DeSoto girls seek confidence

The North DeSoto Lady Griffins took a 9-5 record into Wednesday night’s play.

Yet even at 9-5, North DeSoto coach Stephanie Locke was concerned about a lack of confidence in her team.

“It’s weird,” Locke says. “It’s wild. To be honest, I don’t think we’ve ever won this early.”

Because North DeSoto’s girls have not been big winners in the past, Locke says she has found herself having to convince her team of its abilities.

In Locke’s eyes, her team’s record does lie.

“Actually, I think there were a few games that we should have won,” Locke says. “But we didn’t. I thought we would be a little bit better, but I’m proud of where we are.”

Lock likes the look of her team.

NaKeisha Johnson, a first-year starter at point guard, has given the team solid play in the backcourt.

“She’s done a good job,” Locke says.

And inside, team captain Kashondra Thomas has played well as well.

“We kind of mix it up a lot,” Locke says. “We have a freshman, Jata Hall, who gives us a different look. Meagan Pearson is a sophomore. She does a really good job.

“It depends on who we’re playing. If they’re not very big, then we go to our post players. If they are, we’ve got a lot of speed and I think that helps us a lot. It just depends on who we’re playing.”

That flexibility is one reason Locke is sold on her team.

She also sees talent on the floor for North DeSoto.

“We’ve got height. We’ve got quickness. We’ve got shooters,” she says. “I’ve coached for 10 years and coached college for four years and we’ve got lots and lots of talent. I don’t think they are confident enough in themselves.”

It is that confidence that Locke is trying to instill.

Apparently, a fast start isn’t enough.

“I think our confidence is what is killing us,” Locke says. “I think we’re a lot better than what kids think they are. I don’t want them to think they’re just awesome. I think if …

Better DVDs show best of 'Perfect' stars

December 14th, 2007 by michelle

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (subscription) ()

“The Perfect Holiday,” which opened in theaters Wednesday, sports an impressive cast, but otherwise, it’s far from perfect. (Read the Journal Sentinel review.)

If you want to see “Holiday’s” Morris Chestnut and Gabrielle Union, along with recent Oscar nominees Queen Latifah and Terrence Howard, in a better setting, try these DVDs:

“Boyz N the Hood” (1991, Sony): Chestnut appears opposite Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ice Cube as a doomed high school football star raised on the mean streets of south-central Los Angeles in writer-director John Singleton’s Oscar-nominated debut. Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, Nia Long and Regina King co-star.

“Like Mike” (2002, Fox): Cast again as an athlete - this time, he’s a Los Angeles pro basketball player - Chestnut plays the teammate of a young orphan (Lil’ Bow Wow) who is given a pair of sneakers that may have belonged to Michael Jordan and becomes an overnight NBA superstar. Robert Forster, Eugene Levy, Anne Meara, Crispin Glover and Jonathan Lipnicki co-star.

“Deliver Us From Eva” (2003, Universal): This often engaging African-American take on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” features Union as the oldest of four orphaned sisters whose overbearing ways have driven her younger sisters’ mates to hire a ladies’ man (LL Cool J) to sweep her off her feet and out of their lives. Essence Atkins, Robinne Lee, Meagan Good, Mel Jackson, Duane Martin and Dartanyan Edmonds co-star.

“Bring It On” (2000, Universal): Although her screen time is limited in comparison to co-star Kirsten Dunst’s, Union holds her own in this teen comedy as Isis, the world-weary head cheerleader of a squad whose hip-hop infused moves have been plagiarized by a rival cheerleading team for years until Dunst learns the truth and goes about trying to make it right.

“Living Out Loud” (1998, New Line): dramatic comedy details the emotional fallout suffered by a privileged Manhattanite (Holly Hunter) when she’s dumped …

'Dancing' over, Castroneves ready to drive again

December 14th, 2007 by michelle

Source: Indianapolis Star ()

Two-time Indy 500 champ Helio Castroneves, on a victory lap of media interviews after winning the top prize on “Dancing With the Stars,” says he’s not ready to trade in his race car.

“The career of dancing is going to stop right after the tour is over,” he said. Castronoves will be appearing on the “Dancing with the Stars” tour, which stops in Indianapolis on Jan. 18.

“Right now, I think I’m going to put my money on racing,” he said. “I want that Indy (victory) a third time. I know I can do it.”

The “Dancing” winner is known on the show and at the racetrack for his good-natured grin and unstoppable enthusiasm. This is the guy, after all, who climbs the safety fence to wave to fans after his racing victories.

Today he stopped at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to pose with both the Indy 500 Borg-Warner trophy and the TV show’s trophy, which features a glimmering disco ball.

“I like this one,” he said of the dance trophy. Then he turned to the Borg-Warner and added, “I like this one, too, because it’s a little bigger.”

Terry Angstadt, vice president of the Indy Racing League, said the company realized how important Castroneves’ presence on the show could be for the sport.

“When Danica broke through, it really did take Indy cars…out of the core fan base,” Angstadt said. “Helio’s done the same thing.”

Rutgers women beat Princeton, 53-48

Rutgers looked sloppy, slow and downright reckless at times, but the sixth-ranked Scarlet Knights still managed to sleepwalk to a forgettable 53-48 win over Princeton tonight at Jadwin Gym.

Epiphanny Prince scored a team-high 17 points and Kia Vaughn added 12 for Rutgers (8-2), who won their 16th consecutive game against an unranked team.

The Scarlet Knights used a 9-1 run to open the second half and take a 35-25 lead when Princeton, which stymied Rutgers for much of the first half with its zone, switched to man-to-man for the first five minutes after intermission.

Meagan Cowher converted a three-point play to cap a 10-0 Princeton run to tie it at 40-all with 7:38 to go. Ali Prichard of Princeton (3 8) connected from downtown to knot it up again at 45-all with 5:18 left before Prince hit a 3 and a jumper and Judith Brittany Ray sank a jumper of her own to give Rutgers a 52-45 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

The Scarlet Knights, coming off a 56-51 win over No. 11 California on Monday, used a 12-0 run late in the first half to take a 26-24 halftime lead. Rutgers, playing its fifth game in 10 days, looked shaky for much of the half, committing nine turnovers. Prince had team-high in points (eight) and rebounds (four) before the break for the Scarlet Knights, who struggled to get good looks in the paint against Princeton’s zone.

For the third consecutive game, coach C. Vivian Stringer went with an unorthodox starting five, benching all of her regulars except Heather Zurich. The Scarlet who out-rebounded Princeton, 19-12, before intermission — experimented with a zone to open the game.

Women Last-second shot gives Duke a win

December 9th, 2007 by michelle

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer ()

NEW YORK - Two days after No. 17 Duke squeaked by fourth-ranked Rutgers, 49-44, the women's superpowers went at it again, but against different opponents.
Yesterday, Duke needed Joy Cheek's inside basket off an offensive rebound with 0.02 seconds left to repel Pittsburgh, 51-49, in the first game of the Maggie Dixon Classic doubleheader at Madison Square Garden.
Rutgers then beat back Army, 59-42, after the Black Knights put up a good fight in the first half.
The event, the first women's college doubleheader in the Garden in 26 years, is named for former Army coach Maggie Dixon. She led Army to its first NCAA tournament two seasons ago in her first year at West Point, then died suddenly, just two days after the Final Four.
In the opener, Cheek had 16 points for Duke (7-3), and Abby Waner added 10 points.
Shavonte Zellous and Jania Sims each scored 17 points for the Panthers (6-3), although Zellous (6 for 22) struggled from the field.
Center Marcedes Walker, a University City graduate, had nine points and 13 rebounds for Pitt.
Camden Catholic's Rashidat Junaid, a sophomore reserve center, had a career day with 15 points and 10 rebounds for Rutgers (6-2).
Alex McGuire scored 13 points for Army (5-4).
During the recent loss to Duke, Scarlet Knights coach C. Vivian Stringer, unhappy with her starters, pulled all of them from the floor early in the second half.
Yesterday, they sat on the bench for the opening minutes against Army, in part due to illness running through the team.
"I just thought the backups could set a tone for the game, and they did," Stringer said.
Oklahoma 67, Tulsa 47 - Courtney Paris scored 17 points and matched her season-high with 22 rebounds and No. 9 Oklahoma (6-2) cruised to its sixth straight win, against the Golden Hurricane (2 8) in Tulsa, Okla.
Paris extended her streak double-doubles to 69 straight games.
California 68, Princeton 42 - Kelsey Adrian scored 11 of her …

PREVIOUS RUMORS!

Check out a quick rumor blip where we all talked about Amy Winehouse, Mary J. Blige, and Kanye’s Big Brother and Little Sister. Peep it all here. (I threw y’all of with how I posted, didn’t I?)

BIG TIME REST IN PEACE

From what I understand, Donnie Simpson (legendary BET host) Big Tigger (another legendary BET host) and Stephon Marbury (legendary ball player) all lost their fathers over the previous weekend. I don’t know all of the circumstances surrounding this, but that pretty crazy. Their deaths were not related in any way, as far as I know. We should send a R.I.P./Thank you since the fathers (and mothers) gave us their super talented sons.

DEHAVEN: THE SUBJECT ON JAY-Z’S IT WAS ALL GOOD JUST A WEEK AGO?

Jay-Z: is he such a bad guy? I jokingly made reference to the song “A Week Ago,” (From Vol 2.) but I am hearing that that song is actually about Jay-Z and DeHaven! I don’t know! But here is a rumor from what seems to be an informed person. The person decried the notion that Jay-Z doesn’t take care of the homies. We all know that Jaz-O and Sauce could have signed with The Roc, but choose not to. Now, my source said it was, because they didn’t believe in the Roc, but I heard that they couldn’t “rock” with the paperwork. Jay-Z was used to that “old school” money and was insulted. Remember, Sauce was writing joints for Puff and had gotten a Grammy by this time, I believe. Anyway, think on that.

SPICE ONE: IT WAS ALL GOOD JUST A WEEK AGO!

Some of you might not remember Spice-1, one of the realest rappers ever! I mean, I wasn’t a huge fan, but the respect was always there. Well. Spice has been shot and critically wounded. Apparently, he was shot two times and one the bullets nearly hit him in the heart. Times are crazy, for real! Get better Spice!

Lil Twisters dance off with Pop Warner title

December 6th, 2007 by michelle

Source: The News-Press ()

For many of the girls on the Cape Youth Lil, Mini and Senior Twisters dance squads, Thursday quite possibly held the most stressful, yet most meaningful, 21/2 minutes of their young lives.

Fending off eight squads at the Pop Warner 2007 National Cheer and Dance Championships, the Cape Youth Lil Twisters captured the National Championship at the peewee level, while the Cape Youth Mini Twisters and the Senior Twisters finished second in their respective age groups.

“They all did phenomenal,” said Cape Youth Dance teams spirit director Kelly Wilson. “It was a great day.”

The event took place in Orlando at the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.

The Lil Twisters, made up of 14 11- and 12-year-old girls, finished three points better than the second-place squad.

Each squad was given 2 and 1/2 minutes to perform.

“There’s a lot of pressure in that time period,” Wilson said. “It’s not like a football team. We get that one shot. The tiniest mistake in their tiny eyes is a huge thing.”

After the event, the three squads went back to their hotel, where Wilson said a celebration would be held.

“This is the best feeling in the world,” said Lil Twister Alex Hambruch, 12. “It’s a once-in-a- lifetime experience. I was very nervous, but when they announced (the results) it was so wonderful.”

Lil Twister Danielle Bernando, 11, agreed.

“I’m definitely going to remember this for the rest of my life,” she said. “I was so happy I cried and all my makeup came off.”

Wilson said it cost the league about $10,000 for all three teams to make the trip.

She said the girls raised the money by holding fundraisers and washing cars.

“We’re very good beggars,” Wilson said.

The team arrived in Orlando on Wednesday and will return home today.

Success is new to the dance squads.

Last year the girls on Cape’s junior midget squad, most of whom …

Hudsonville's Cobb picks UM for water polo

December 5th, 2007 by michelle

Source: The Grand Rapids Press - MLive.com ()

HUDSONVILLE — Meagan Cobb said it was tempting to join
her former water polo teammate in Southern California, but
the maize and blue tradition won her over in the end.

Cobb, a senior at Hudson

ville, paid a visit to ex-teammate Jillian Stapf at Cal
State-Northridge, but she said the chance to play at
Michigan was too good to pass up. Cobb recently became the
second water polo player in Hudsonville history to accept a
scholarship at the Division I level.

Cobb signed her letter of intent last week.

“Michigan was just the right fit for me,” Cobb
said. “I love the school as a whole. I love the
academic aspect and the water polo aspect. Going out to
California would have been very tempting, but Michigan has a
reputation for being Michigan. It’s a great
school.”

Cobb is part of a three-player class coming in, which
includes Tara Brigham (Bayton, Texas) and Claire Ivry
(Miramonte, Calif.).

“Meagan has really progressed rapidly at a small
program in high school and has led it to good success along
with her other teammates,” Michigan water polo coach
Matt Anderson said in a statement on the Wolverines’
Web site.

“I believe that she is truly going to turn into an
extremely solid college player at the two-meter level.”

There were some laughs exchanged at the signing about
Michigan referring to Hudsonville as a small program.

“We are a small program as far as they are
concerned,” Hudsonville coach Dave Weick said.
“Meagan got a lot of recognition and she’d made
some visits to some big schools out West. We’re
starting to get a lot more schools contacting us because of
athletes like Jill and Meagan signing.”

Cobb scored 155 goals last season for the Eagles, who
finished with a 31-3 overall record and defeated Rockford
for the state championship.

“I visited two schools after Michigan,” Cobb said,
“but I loved it. very relieved this is over
and I decided to go there. I don’t know for sure …
